Troubleshooting M-Lab Tests

Edit

Steps to take when an M-Lab test takes too long, fails to start, or never completes.

beginner troubleshootingtests

Most M-Lab tests complete in under thirty seconds. If a test is taking longer than that, or fails to start or complete, work through the steps below before reporting a bug.

Initial Steps

  1. Run the test again. An unusual network issue may have caused a one-off failure.
  2. Try a different location. If the test fails at home, does it work at a coffee shop or library? This helps isolate whether the problem is specific to your network.
  3. Check for a firewall. If the test never starts or never completes, your connection may be behind a firewall. This is common on managed workplace networks that restrict certain types of traffic.

Reporting a Bug

If none of the above resolves the issue, email support@measurementlab.net. To help M-Lab support diagnose the problem, include as much of the following as possible:

  • Your operating system
  • Your browser name and version
  • The name of the test that is not working
  • Any error messages you received

M-Lab support typically replies within five business days.

You can also ask other M-Lab users for help in the M-Lab-Discuss group.
